Heat pump or gas furnace — which is right for Western Washington?

Our mild marine climate is close to ideal for heat pumps: winter design temperatures around here are in the 20s–30s, well within the efficient range of modern cold-climate equipment, and you get air conditioning in the same package. Gas furnaces still make sense when gas is already in the home and the ductwork is sound, especially if replacement cost is the deciding factor. Should I convert from gas to electric heat?

Done right, a heat pump conversion delivers lower operating costs and cooling in summer. Done wrong — undersized or on leaky ducts — it disappoints, which is why we always start with a load calculation.

How do you decide what size system my home needs?

We run an ACCA Manual J load calculation using your home’s actual measurements, insulation levels, window area, and orientation — never a rule of thumb like “500 square feet per ton.” Oversized equipment short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly, and wears out early. Undersized equipment runs constantly and never quite catches up. Right-sizing is the single biggest quality difference between installers.

How long does an installation take?

A straightforward furnace or heat pump changeout is usually one day. Add AC or a new outdoor unit and it may run a day and a half. Full duct replacement, multi-zone ductless, or gas-to-electric conversions typically take two to three days. Commercial projects are scheduled from plans. We give you a specific schedule in your proposal and we keep it.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Always. Every installation we do is permitted with the local jurisdiction and inspected. We pull the mechanical and electrical permits, schedule the inspections, and meet the inspector when needed. An unpermitted install can void equipment warranties, complicate a home sale, and leave safety issues unchecked — we will not work without one.

What warranties come with a new system?

Equipment carries the manufacturer’s parts warranty — typically 10 years when we register it, which we do for you. On top of that, our workmanship warranty covers the installation itself: duct connections, electrical terminations, refrigerant charge, condensate handling, and commissioning. If something we installed is not right, we make it right.

Do heat pumps actually work when it gets cold here?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps deliver full rated heat well below freezing and continue producing heat far below that. For the handful of nights a year Puget Sound drops into the teens, we size backup electric heat strips or, in dual-fuel setups, keep your existing furnace as the cold-snap backup. Your home stays warm either way.

What is a ductless mini-split, and when is it the right choice?

A ductless system pairs an outdoor unit with one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, each heating and cooling its own zone. It is the right answer for homes without ductwork, additions, ADUs, garages and shops, or rooms the main system never conditioned properly. It avoids the cost of building new ducts and gives you room-by-room control.

Do I need new ductwork with a new system?

Accepted Answer

Not always. If your ducts are sound and sized adequately we test, seal, and reuse them. But leaky or undersized ducts can waste 20–30% of the heat you pay for, and a new high-efficiency system on bad ducts will underperform. We inspect ductwork during the on-site measure and price any corrections separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

Sometimes. Heat pumps and backup heat strips need dedicated capacity, and older 100-amp panels that are already full may need a service upgrade or load management. We evaluate your panel during the on-site visit — before you sign anything — so panel work never shows up as a surprise change order.

How should I maintain my new system?

Change or wash filters on schedule (we show you how at walkthrough), keep the outdoor unit clear of debris, and have the system professionally checked annually — ideally before heating season. Registered equipment warranties typically require documented annual maintenance, and a well-maintained heat pump easily runs 15+ years here.

Do you handle commercial and industrial projects?

Yes — it is a core part of our business, not a side line.
