Our South Hill heat pump is original to the house (1990s). Repair or replace?

At 20-plus years, parts availability and efficiency both work against repair. A modern variable-speed heat pump typically cuts operating cost by a third and adds a fresh 10–12 year warranty. We price both paths and let the numbers decide.

Can you add central air to an older downtown Puyallup home with a gas furnace?

Usually. If the ducts are sound we pair a new AC (or a heat pump) with the furnace; if the ducts are partial or undersized we price sealing or a compact-duct system. The on-site static-pressure test tells us which before you commit.
